ZONE
OVERLAY
A multiplayer interpretation of the Zone, built around persistent characters, faction allegiances and the consequences of how you treat other stalkers.

The project
The balance of the Zone is the central design problem.
Exploration, danger and conflict belong here. Cooperation needs a place too. ZONE OVERLAY aims to make helping others, keeping commitments and building trust meaningful ways to progress.
You would begin as a loner with little equipment and no established standing. Small jobs and useful actions would open a path toward supplies, recognition and eventually a faction.
Shared gameplay and these progression systems are still in development.

Design notes
Rules and names may change
01Karma
A personal measure, visible only to you, shaped by genuine help and harmful actions. It would influence opportunities and encounters in the Zone.
Access to hidden stashes and a greater risk of mutant encounters are ideas being explored. Their balance and triggers have not been implemented.
02Standing
How other stalkers regard you. Useful work, reliable conduct and repeated aggression would affect your public standing. Standing is the working name for this system.
Unprovoked killing would carry consequences. A path toward Bandit status and restricted access to established traders and technicians is being considered, alongside ways to rebuild trust.
03Factions
Begin as a loner. Earn recognition, learn a faction's purpose and work toward joining it. Membership would involve requirements and a deliberate choice.
Faction relationships would remain separate from karma and public standing. An allegiance should not automatically decide whether someone is trustworthy.
The system should recognize context, including self-defense, and resist players farming reputation through repeated favors between alternate accounts.
